Adding Meaning to Processing the Pandemic
The world is changing and has changed unexpectedly due to the pandemic which is outside of our control but that doesn't dismiss how we are affected and processing having to deal with the loss of normalcy. Whether the loss is as simple as missing social gatherings and going to the gym or as difficult as the direct effect of the economy shift and medical complications, everyone is experiencing some level of grief and uncontrollable uncertainty. With this uncertainty understanding the stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, and acceptance) and that they may not happen in this order are helpful; but adding meaning to this process could be the light in what seems like a dark time.
Although we know this is temporary this will impact how we interact with people which will be different from what we once knew. People are realizing we're not as distance as we thought or think we are thanks to technology and being able to have group FaceTime calls, virtual parties and events to interact with people they've only dreamt of or catching up with family and friends they haven't had time to. The appreciation and importance of nature by working out in your yard or going on a simple walk to get some fresh air and kissed by the sun. Finally having the time to sit and catch up on self-care and nurture ourselves to be able to be present in the many other relationships we have. Recognizing the moments we have here with each other are precious and shouldn't be taken for granted. Amidst the things we have lost to the harshness of this pandemic it has given us the opportunity to re-calibrate, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the things we do have around us. So take a couple days to do nothing, rest, and feel as you're processing all of this; don't fight it, allow your emotions to move through you, keep going, and feel empowered because of it. Creating and keeping a routine can help reduce feeling overwhelmed and keep some level of normalcy during this time. Be sure to incorporate time where you journal, reflect, practice gratitude and appreciate the things you do have to add some meaning while we process living through a pandemic.
